Our Community partnership programme supports charitable and non-profit organisations in the communities in which we operate. 

In the UK we are the Community Partner of the British Triathlon Federation. We have been a sponsor of the British Triathlon Federation since 2006 and have actively supported the organisation in its journey to Olympic and World Championship success. In 2007 we launched the Tata Kids of Steel children’s triathlon series to encourage youngsters aged 8 to 13 to give “tri a try.” By working in partnership with the British Triathlon Federation, schools, and the local communities in which we operate, our Tata Kids of Steel series has introduced more than 75,000 youngsters to the sport. 

In the Netherlands we organise one of the world’s leading and longest running chess competitions, the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. The tournament was launched in 1938 and takes place in January in Wijk aan Zee every year. As well as attracting the world's top chess players, the tournament provides opportunities for the most passionate chess amateurs to get involved in playing alongside the Grandmasters.

Tata Steel is not currently accepting new requests for corporate sponsorship. However any community and non-profit organisations wishing to find out more about how to apply for support can do so through our Community Partnership Programme.

 
Chess Tournament

The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is renowned as one of the most important chess events in the world. 

83rd Edition of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament: January 15-31, 2021

The main rounds of the tournament take place in the traditional coastal village Wijk aan Zee (Amsterdam region).

Two groups with Grandmasters - The Tata Steel Chess Tournament features two main Grandmaster groups, each with 14 players. They are known as the Tata Steel Masters and the Tata Steel Challengers. Both groups consist of world class players and attract thousands of offline and millions of online spectators from across the globe. 

Tata Steel is proud of the global standing that Tata Steel Chess Tournament has acquired during its long history, and the positive impact it continues to have both inside and outside the world of chess.

At Tata Steel we are a firm believer in the benefits of brain sports, especially for our ‘Future Generations’. Additionally, we witness time and again that people of different age, gender, culture and backgrounds build a bond and connect easily through the game of chess.  We therefore activate the tournament through various school programmes in our own community and in those we visit with the Chess on Tour events to connect school children and positively impact their mental and social development.

Tata Kids of Steel

Tata - Kids of Steel events are a series of inclusive and fun activities for children aged 8 to 13.

The events involve different sports and activities but they are all organised or supported by Tata Steel for youngsters in the areas in which the company operates.

Tata – Kids of Steel Triathlon

In the UK, Tata Steel works with the British Triathlon Federation to host an annual series of mini triathlon events. To date, nearly 70,000 children from hundreds of schools have experienced the sport of triathlon through the Tata - Kids of Steel triathlon series.

Tata – Kids of Steel Run

After initially focusing on triathlon events in the UK, the success of the Tata - Kids of Steel series led to the diversification of the series in 2014 to give youngsters in our communities in the UK and Europe the chance to participate in other community sports events.  So far, more than 2,000 children have taken part in our Tata – Kids of Steel Run events in Wales and Heemskerk, in The Netherlands. We continue to look for opportunities to give children the chance to share the joy and pride of participating in Tata - Kids of Steel and to play an active role in supporting the social wellbeing of our communities across Europe.

Tata - Kids of Steel Football

The Tata - Kids of Steel Football initiative was launched in IJmuiden in the Netherlands in October 2015. Working in partnership with Telstar Football Club, the scheme gives youngsters the chance to work with professional players to develop their skills on the pitch, while also learning about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle.

Tata - Kids of Steel Chess

Around 250 youngsters took part in the first Tata - Kids of Steel Chess events in January 2016. The events challenged the participants to develop their strategic thinking skills and took place during the Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, North Holland. Now it is a yearly returning event where children out of the community play a simultaneous chess game.
