Carbon neutral steelmaking is a major challenge for the steel industry worldwide 

While the critical role of steel to help build the net zero world of the future is clear – renewable energy projects, electric vehicles and sustainable buildings to name just a few – we recognise the current steel making process creates substantial CO₂ emissions.

Tata Steel’s UK business is committed to reducing its emissions, with the ambition of achieving CO₂  neutral steel making by 2045 and achieving at least a 30% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2030 (compared to 2018 levels). To achieve this we are looking at a range of technology options and are holding detailed discussions with the UK Government.

In the Netherlands we are committed to reducing our CO₂ emissions with 35 - 40% by 2030 and being CO₂-neutral by 2045. 

In the meantime we are not sitting idle. Instead, we are working on a large number of projects to make reductions in CO₂ emissions as part of our push towards carbon neutral steel production. Each of these will help us to further reduce our carbon emissions.

The challenge of meeting society’s demands for net-zero carbon steel making is huge. But our company has a long history of meeting such challenges in a responsible way and we believe passionately in steel’s vital role in society’s low-carbon future.

In the Netherlands we will accelerate the transition to hydrogen in order to contribute to the prevention of further climate change. We expect to make hydrogen-based steel with Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) technology by 2030 at the latest, but we aim to bring this forward even further. With the switch to DRI technology, Tata Steel in IJmuiden will reduce its Co₂ emissions by 35% - 40%. 

We can also close a blast furnace and a coke oven and thus significantly improve the environment of the IJmuiden community.
