Preservative oil
The standard oil applied by Tata Steel acts as a protective coating. Other types of oil may be available to meet your requirement.
Tata Steel offers a range of oiling levels:
Lightly oiled: 55 mg/ft2 per side
Regular oiled: 110 mg/ft2 per side
Other oiling levels are available on request. Tata Steel is not responsible for the risk of corrosion during storage or shipment if material is ordered in the unoiled condition.
Surface cleanliness
Tata Steel can guarantee improved surface cleanliness on request for batch annealed products. The cleanliness is tested with a tape test, in which the loss of reflection is measured. The reflection gives an indication of the oil residue on the annealed product.
Two levels of loss of reflectivity are available for batch annealed products: a maximum of 20% or a maximum of 30%.

EN_US-Engineering-Product-Cold-rolled-Ymvit enameling-All Grades OverviewTSN
Overview
Tata Steel has the correct steel grade for direct and conventional enameling and for one or two layered enameling.
Vitrostaal LD CS/DS
The ultimate enameling steels made by Tata Steel, suitable for direct cover coat enameling. Decarburized in the steelplant, titanium free, cold-rolled and batch annealed, it has perfect adhesion of coating. Vitrostaal LD has improved resistance to carbon boiling and fish scaling.
Vitrostaal IF
Is a titanium stabilized enameling steel fit for all purposes when suitable enameling processes are used. It is especially suitable for applications where extra deep drawing is necessary.
Applications
- Barbecues
- Bathtubs
- Cookers and washing machines
- Heat exchange panels (pore-free)
- Photo Voltaic solar panels
- Sinks
- White boards and wall panels
Relationship with standards
Steel for direct white enameling complies with ASTM standard A424: 2006.

EN_US-Engineering-Product-Cold-rolled-All Grades Surface aspectsTSE
Surface aspects
Surface quality according to ASTM A1008: 2013 and ASTM A568: 2011.
Surface quality class 1 (exposed):
The better side must be free of defects that can spoil the uniform appearance of a high-quality paint or of an electrolytic coating. The other side must at least conform to surface quality unexposed.
Surface quality class 2 (unexposed):
Defects that do not influence the formability or the application of surface coatings are permitted. These are defects such as pores, minor scratches, slight indentations, small grooves or slight discolouration.
Inspected side
As a rule, the upper side of the strip is inspected; on request, the strip can be wound so that the inspected side is the underside.
Surface texture/roughness
Cold-rolled annealed and skin passed steel is available in several surface textures. All textures are available.
Unless specified otherwise, Tata Steel will supply ‘Regular matte’.
Description | Roughness µinch CLA |
---|---|
Commercial bright | ≤ 10 |
H - dull | ≤ 16 |
Light matte | ≤ 36 |
Regular matte | 24 - 76 |
Rough matte | 50 - 100 |
EN_US-Engineering-Product-Cold-rolled-Ymvit enamelling-Vitrostaal IF-Properties TSN
Properties
Mechanical properties
Steel for enamelling has the following typical mechanical properties (skin-passed) - these are measured transverse to the rolling direction.
Tata Steel Vitrostaal | Grade | Vitrostaal IF |
---|---|---|
ASTM A424: 2006 | Grade | Type III |
Yield strength | ksi | 20 |
Tensile strength | ksi | 41 |
Elongation | % | 50 |
rm-value | 2.20 | |
n-value | 0.22 |
Min. elongation after fraction uses test piece length L0 = 2 inches.
Chemical composition
Tata Steel’s Vitrostaal complies with the following heat analysis with maximum values in weight percentages.
Tata Steel | Vitrostaal | Vitrostaal IF |
---|---|---|
ASTM A424: 2006 | Grade | Type III |
C | Max. | 0.004 |
Mn | Max. | 0.35 |
S | Max. | 0.030 |
Ti | Max. | 0.080 |
Cu 1 | Max. | 0.040 |
1. Copper concentration is dependent on phosphorous concentration.
The elements P and Cu are kept within certain limits to ensure that the reactivity of the steel surface is as constant as possible. Under normal conditions this leads to a reproducible enamelling result.
Surface aspects
Steel for enameling shall be supplied with a surface roughness between 24 and 76 CLA.
